Lakewood & Anacortes Advance in 2A Boys District Tourney

The Lakewood Cougars eliminated the Sehome Mariners and the Anacortes Seahawks ended the season of the Bellingham Bayhawks, Monday night at Mount Vernon High School, in the consolation round of the 2A Boys District Tournament.

Lakewood 53, Sehome 43

Trailing by three points at halftime, the Cougars outscored the Mariners by 13 points in the second half to eliminate the Mariners.

Sehome led 25-22 at halftime as sophomore Nolan Wright and freshman Quincy Tanovan combined for 17 points for the Mariners.  Wright hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, which was followed by threes on consecutive possessions by Tanovan.  That was nine points in an 11-0 run by the Mariners to take a seven-point lead.

Just before halftime, a six-point lead for the Mariners was cut in half by a long 3-point buzzer-beater by Cougars senior forward Zach Stoddard.  Stoddard, along with senior guard Ben Rucker, combined for 19 of the Cougars 22 first half output.

Early in the third quarter, the Cougars ran off nine straight points on two 3-pointers by Rucker, and another by Junior guard Evan Stacey, which put the Cougars in front 35-31.

Rucker and Stoddard scored 12 of the Cougars 15 points in the third quarter, but the Mariners narrowed the gap to two points heading into the final period.

Sophomore post Cole Turrell scored inside on the Cougars zone defense, three times in the first minutes of the fourth quarter.  The Mariners worked a “Hi-low” set as Turrell took feeds from the high post area for open scores.

However, that could not keep up with the scoring of Cougars sophomore forward Caleb Greenland.  Greenland, one of the Cougars leading scorers, had only a single point through three quarters, but scored the Cougars first ten points of the fourth quarter, helping the Cougars open up a lead.  The Mariners could manage only two points in the final four minutes of the game.

Wright led the Mariners with 11 points, as they end the season with an 11-12 record.  Tanovan finished with ten, and eight for Turrell.  Two sophomores and a freshman in that list.

Rucker led the Cougars with 20 points, with Stoddard adding 16, and Greenland 11.

The Cougars (14-9), who lost to the Mariners 61-51 in the regular season, will have a rematch with Anacortes, Thursday, at 715p at Mount Vernon High School.  The Cougars defeated the Seahawks 63-55 during the regular season.

Anacortes 78, Bellingham 60

After a streaky first few minutes, the Anacortes Seahawks slowly pulled away, and eliminated the Bayhawks.

The Seahawks appeared to shoot down the chance of an upset by scoring the first eight points of the game in just 90 seconds.  But the Bayhawks had other ideas, as they gained their footing and scored the games next seven points.

But the Seahawks ran off another eight-point run, and were in control the rest of the way.  The Seahawks led 22-9 after one quarter, and 38-26 at halftime.

Junior guard Davis Fogle, scored 26 of the Seahawks first 38 points, on his way to a 37-point night.

The Bayhawks never backed down and kept attacking.  Especially senior guard Wyatt Stephan.  Stephan used his strength and athleticism to score 11 first-half points, and finished his senior season with 21 for the game.

The Bayhawks also got 14 points off the bench from sophomore Joe Harward, and 11 from senior post, Jesse Harward.

In the second half, as the Bayhawks paid extra attention to Fogle, he was able to spot open teammates for easy scores, which led to a 26-point lead for the Seahawks at the end of the third quarter.

Sophomore forward Micah Dickison scored 17 for the Seahawks, highlighted by a 3-point shot he hit seconds after making a back-court steal in the third quarter.  Junior guard Jake Andrew hit three 3-pointers for the Seahawks, and finished with 13 points.

The win sets up a rematch with Lakewood, Thursday at 715p, at Mount Vernon High School.

The Seahawks are now 18-5 on the season, while Bellingham finishes the year with a record of 12-11.
