The 2023 2A State Tournament MVP, Lynden senior Anthony Canales, picked up where he left off last season, scoring 29 points in leading the Lions to a 77-50 victory over the Tamanawis (BC), Wildcats.
Canales had 13 points by halftime, despite sitting out six minutes of the first quarter with foul trouble. He then added 11 more in the third quarter. Brant Heppner, a 6-6 junior, scored 11 first quarter points and finished with 22.
The Wildcats are a highly rated program in the big school classification in British Columbia, and showed to be fundamentally sound, but were overwhelmed by the Lions floor
quickness. The Wildcats did sink seven 3-pointers and shoot 21-27 from the free throw line.
The Lions begin conference play on Monday with a game at Oak Harbor, who opened their season with a win over La Conner. Oak Harbor will Snohomish on Friday.
